Do you know that Lego Education WeDo 2.0 core set introduces robotics and coding for kids?

Lego blocks are not just expensive toys made to entertain our kids. They are actually a good tool to educate our children with robotics, coding, science, computational thinking and many more.

I sent my two kids to the Lego Academy for a year but could not continue to do so due to financial constraints. Well, the cost of sending two children in the academy just went way beyond our budget.

It turned out there is not just the Lego set and monthly fee to take care of but also the different robotics events and competition that they attend (national and international) which, although optional, our kids felt left out for not being able to join.

As not to allow those precious Lego sets lay in waste, I decided to let the tinkering Mom in me to take the reigns and blog about our experience! 🙂

As I mentioned above, this is a set that introduces robotics and coding for kids. So aside from a sturdy box, sorting tray and assorted building elements, it has a smart hub, a motor, a motion sensor, a tilt sensor .

I discovered that we can access and download Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Core Set lesson plans and other resources from their official website. For that reason, although I have no prior knowledge about Lego Education WeDo 2.0 core set and how it works I was able to learn it. Hence, even non-techie Moms can follow and apply their lessons easily.

In addition, the corresponding Lego Education WeDo 2.0 core set programming software is available for download from the Lego Education site.

Moreover, it should be noted that the Lego Education WeDo 2.0 core set requires a computer or a tablet as a coding device (not included upon purchase). This does not work on mobile phones.

For teaching to become effective, of course, we need to study and learn the lessons firsthand. On my part, I did not just read and study but even made the model, did the programming task and explored its ins and outs. That way, I made myself familiar with the building elements and its programming software.

The Building Parts

Lego WeDo 2.0 Smart HubSMART HUB.
🪐This is one the most important device of the Lego Education WeDo 2.0 core set.
🪐And through this and Bluetooth the coding device and the model can have connection.
🪐So it is through this that the model built by the student comes to life.
🪐Also, on top of it is a LED which lights up and changes color upon entering a number from 0 to 10.
Lego WeDo 2.0 Medium MotorMOTOR.
🪐 This is a medium motor which makes the model’s mobility possible.
🪐 It rotates clockwise and counter clockwise which results to a forward and backward movement.
🪐 A connection with the Smart Hub is made possible by Using the connector attached to its rear.
Lego WeDo 2.0 Motion SensorMOTION SENSOR.
🪐 This is also called Distance Sensor.
🪐 This has two IR eyes on its front and a connector at the back for connecting to the smart hub.
🪐 As the model moves the motion sensor can measure its distance from the object.
🪐 So an action can be set for the model to accomplish when it gets near to or far from the object.
🪐 It also produces a number output from 0 to 10.
Lego WeDo 2.0 Tilt SensorTILT SENSOR.
🪐This also creates a kind of cue for the model to perform another action when it senses a tilt or a shake.
🪐According to the way it tilted whether to the right, left, up, down, or any of the four, an action can be set for the model to perform.
THE BUILDING ELEMENTS.
🪐 Different kinds of plates, bricks, blocks, beams, tiles, connectors, tubes, pulleys, chains and a string are inside this set.

The Command Blocks

The Lego Education WeDo 2.0 core set programming blocks comes in colors green, red, yellow, orange and light blue.

NOTE: The interface allows multiple programs in one project.

YELLOW BLOCKS

💫 Put this at the beginning of the coding blocks.
💫 Press RUN to start the code or program.

💫 Also a START block.
💫 Long pressing the block allows you to select the letter, number or symbol desired to start the program.
💫 To RUN the program, you have to press the letter, number or symbol chosen.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Start ButtonSTART ON MESSAGE Block.
💫 Another START block.
💫 Requires receiving a correct or a matching message for the program to RUN.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Send Message BlockSEND MESSAGE Block.
💫 This block allows sending a message to the program.
💫 A messages can be in a form of letters, numbers and symbols.
💫 Usually paired with the START ON MESSAGE Block.
💫 The correct match of message from the SEND MESSAGE block will activate the START ON MESSAGE block.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Wait For BlockWAIT FOR.
💫 Also called an EVENTS block.
💫 There is a need for an input in order to make this block work.
💫 A number input would mean an amount of waiting time before performing the next action/s.
💫 A sensor input is an event the sensor detects before performing the next action/s.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Repeat BlockREPEAT Block.
💫 This is also called the LOOP block.
💫 Repeated action/s can be put inside this block to avoid a long sequence of blocks performing the same action/s.
💫 If a NUMBER INPUT is set as a condition, the program will repeat the action according to that number.
💫 If a SENSOR INPUT is set as a condition, the program will repeat the action as long as something the sensor detects an event.
💫 If there is NO INPUT or NO CONDITION set, then it means that the action should be repeatedly (even infinitely) unless the STOP block is pressed.

GREEN BLOCKS

ImageName / Description
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Light BlockLIGHT Block.
🎈 We may also call it the SMARTHUB block.
🎈 This block actually activates the LED on top of the smarthub to light up with a particular color.
🎈 The color changes according to the number input from 0 to 10.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Motor This Way BlockMOTOR THAT WAY Block.
🎈 This makes the motor to turn its axle CLOCKWISE.
🎈 This also causes the model to move BACKWARD.
🎈 However, clicking it once will change it into MOTOR THIS WAY block thus changing its direction.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Motor That way BlockMOTOR THIS WAY Block.
🎈 This makes the motor to turn its axle COUNTERCLOCKWISE and causes the model to move FORWARD.
🎈 Also, clicking it once will change it into MOTOR THAT WAY block.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Motor Power BlockMOTOR POWER Block.
🎈 This determines the SPEED of the motor.
🎈 This requires an input number from 0 to 9  wherein a lower number means a slower speed and a higher number means a faster speed.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Motor On For BlockMOTOR ON FOR Block.
🎈 This determines the duration of time for the motor to keep on on working.
🎈 The numeric input, either whole or decimal number, is equivalent to the number of seconds the motor will work.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Motor Off Block MOTOR OFF Block.
🎈 This is simply the STOP MOTOR block. This will cause the motor to cease working.

RED BLOCKS

Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Display Background BlockDISPLAY BACKGROUND.
✨ This block causes an image to appear on the screen.
✨ According to the numeric input, the screen displays a corresponding image.
✨ However, an input of number zero just displays a white screen.
✨ There at least 28 built-in available images to choose from. 
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Display BlockDISPLAY Block.
✨ This block will allow the program to show texts, numbers and symbols on the screen.
✨ The output has a default color in black and appears on the middle.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Add DisplayADD TO DISPLAY.
✨ This performs ADDITION to the numeric input.
✨ However, clicking the block changes the operation from addition to SUBTRACTION, MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION.
✨ Hence, according to the mathematical operation chosen, the block performs the task  on its numeric input.
✨ This block accepts Whole, decimal and signed numbers as input.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Maximize Display BlockDISPLAY FULL SIZE.
✨ This block makes the display screen bigger.
✨ Then, clicking the block changes it into a DISPLAY MEDIUM block or DISPLAY CLOSED block.
✨ The DISPLAY MEDIUM block makes the display screen smaller while the DISPLAY CLOSED block makes the screen appear for a second (like a flash) and then closes.
Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Play Sound BlockPLAY SOUND Block.
✨ This block adds a sound to the program string.
✨ A numeric input (from 1 to 28) has a corresponding sound file from the built-in list.
✨ This block also allows recording, playing and adding new sound file.
✨ The newly added file/s has letters as file name.
✨ Write the correct letter/number in order to use that particular sound file.
✨ Using a non-existent letter or number as input results in a no sound output.

🎭 This block has four different modes will appear simultaneously through clicking on the block.
🎭 The initial mode is SHAKE.
🎭 Clicking the block will change into its other modes.

🎭 This will get the Tilt Sensor mode “Up” as input.

What I love about Lego Education WeDo 2.0 is that they did not stop at just selling their sets but much more they offered a wide range of support in their website for free. When you visit their site, you can find teacher’s resources, lesson plans, building instructions and tutorials.

Conclusion

Lego Education WeDo 2.0 core set is a fun and interesting way to learn robotics and coding for kids. Personally, using the sensors and how it really works piqued my curiosity, too. There are just basically two sensors included in the set. However, applying the different and knowing their outputs are quite interesting to know.

As someone who studied Computer Science in college and realizes how increasingly digitized the world is becoming, Lego Education Wedo sounds like an excellent learning tools for both kids and adults! I love the fact that children are using code (do you happen to know if the program utilizes Python, Linux, C++, or another coding platform?) to build Lego-bots: who didn’t love playing with Legos as kids (I still play with my Legos sometimes, and I’m in my 20s. Haha)? With this program, kids will learn to code and become little architects (take that, Roblox! Haha). I will definitely share your website with my friends and family. God bless you!

    1. Thank you CN. This particular set is just to intoduce programming concepts to kids and uses drag-and-drop block-based coding. There are other Lego sets that can be programmed using the C-language, Java and Phyton. I haven’t tried them yet though.

      By the way, you are right. This set is fun for both kids and adults. I’m playing with it, too! 😅

  2. Hi Rose, This is a completely new world for me. I had no idea. The legos I know from my time as a child are these simple to build a car or an ambulance. But I never heard that children use Lego to build a robot. That is amazing! Your children are really very well educated. I never heard about this in Germany or the Netherlands. But of course, if I would search I mind find quite a lot about it. Children using Lego to build a robot or learn to code are very well equipped for the future. I am really amazed!
